5 Ways to Save Energy For The Holiday Season

Christmas presents under tree

The holiday festivities have most likely already started in your home.  Twinkling lights on the Christmas tree, a decorated lawn and some homemade cookies are important each holiday.  But what is also important is saving money on your energy bill too.  Not only is December expensive for buying gifts, it can be expensive for electricity, heating and water as well.  These 5 tips will help you save precious dollars this Christmas.

  1. Limit Light Usage

This is a super easy way to save on money for the holidays.  If you have a timer, place the lights on a 6 hour time limit or set them to come on when it’s dark and turn off at midnight.  Make sure any indoor lights are turned off before bed as well to conserve energy and prevent any fire hazards.

  1. Switch to LEDstring of Christmas lights

When shopping for new Christmas lights, make it a point to buy LED ones.  These lights use 90% less electricity than regular Christmas lights and are just as affordable.  Get great deals on these right after the holidays for under $10.

  1. Turn the Thermostat Down When You Have Guests

One of the best parts about Christmas is getting together with family and friends to share a meal.  When you have people coming over for the holiday, set your thermostat a few degrees lower.  More bodies in the home means more warmth!lighted Christmas tree

4.  Invest in Energy Saving Batteries

Many gifts for loved ones consume a lot of energy.  Buy rechargeable batteries for items such as controllers, game consoles and remote controlled items. You save money and resources by not going out and constantly buying replacement batteries.

  1. Multi-task Your Cooking

A great way to save energy is to calculate what items you need to bake in the oven and if you can double up on some dishes that cook in the same temperature.  This greatly reduces energy use if you bake two food items at once and you ultimately save time on your holiday feast and warm up your home a little bit at the same time!
